みきとP - 「さよならはきえない」 (Mikito-P - "Sayonara wa Kienai" / "Goodbyes Are Not Forgotten") Lyrics Translation

This is the answer song to みきとP - 「夏の半券」 (Mikito-P - "Natsu no Hanken" / "The Ticket Stub of Summer") which is equally, if not more emotional.

(Translation note: Technically, 「さよならはきえない / Sayonara wa Kienai」 means "Goodbyes do not Disappear", since 消(き)える "kieru" can mean any of the following:

  • light, fire, or electricity disappears or goes off
  • light from a source like the sunlight goes off
  • snow melts, fog dissipates, a rainbow fades, foam (of a beverage) disappears
  • become missing from sight, or hidden from view
  • to become lost in a crowd
  • to disappear
  • (in the case of 記憶から消えていった / kioku kara kiete itta) to fade from people's memories
  • an emotion fades or vanishes
  • several other meanings not commonly encountered in everyday use

Since there are too many possibilities on how to translate the title of this song, and it is too hard to explain, and since "goodbyes" are an abstract concept unseen and not felt, I chose the 7th meaning, to disappear from people's memories. However, keep in mind that other meanings may be possible.)

(Translator's note: I am not sure what 恋人割り / koibito-wari means even after Googling about it, but it seems to be some sort of mobile phone discount for couples. If that was the case, then the lyrics would be "...dissolving the cellular phone contract with discount for couples..." but even so, it sounds really bad, and would only cause more confusion, so I just left it as is.)
